The ambition of creating accommodation for disabled people visiting the Isle of Man, as well as locals needing respite care, has moved a step closer – but there is still a long way to go until the dream is realised.

The Joey Dunlop Foundation was established in honour of the late TT legend with the aim of remembering the 26-times TT winner and tireless charity worker with a permanent memorial.

Hard work and hectic fundraising have kept the efforts going and, shortly before the start of the 2009 TT, it was confirmed the Foundation had acquired Braddan Bridge House to be the venue for the planned accommodation.

The building, which has been renamed Joey Dunlop House, is alongside the TT circuit, meaning it is in the perfect position, but work is needed to convert it into accommodation for the disabled.

It is hoped Joey Dunlop House will be up and running in time for the 2010 TT.

With that in mind, the Foundation will be holding a series of fundraising events and promotions during the TT to bring in vitally needed cash.

Foundation chairman Kevin Quirk said:

‘With Fundraising now on it’s final lap and the chequered flag in sight, the Joey Dunlop Foundation committee is preparing for another hectic TT Festival. After having raised over £500,000 we need the additional support of Joey fans to ensure that our facilities are fitted out to the highest calibre.’

For the chance to win a Honda motorcycle, as well as supporting the Foundation, you can purchase a tombola ticket from the Hailwood Centre at the TT Grandstand throughout the festival. The centre also has the full range of Joey Dunlop Foundation merchandise, ideal for presents to take home.

On Mad Sunday, June 7, you are invited to visit Joey Dunlop House between 10am and 5pm, as well as visiting nearby Braddan Church Hall, where the TT trophies will be on display.

Bushy’s beer tent in Loch Promenade, Douglas, is the place to be on Tuesday, June 9, when the Foundation will be holding a fundraising night.

There will also be a chance to show your support for the Foundation during the Laxey TT Motorcycle Show, which starts at midday on June 11.

Representatives of the Foundation will also be at the Billown circuit in the south of the Island on June 13, when the Lightweight and Ultra Lightweight TT races are run.

If you have some spare time during Race Week and would like to help out the Foundation, call Events Coordinator Suzanne, after 4pm, on 07624 421102.

Mr Quirk added:

‘Please support the Joey Dunlop Foundation. Providing a facility to benefit all in memory of a TT Legend!’
