Crash claims life of TT sidecar star

Isle of Man TT sidecar regular Phil Dongworth has died following a crash at the Southern 100.
The Worcester driver was injured in a crash at Ballanorris on the Billown circuit in the south of the Island on Tuesday evening and was airlifted to Noble’s Hospital. Race organisers announced on Wednesday morning that the 43-year-old had succumbed to his injuries.
His passenger Stu Castles remains in hospital.
An official statement said:
‘The organisers of the Southern 100 Road Races regret to announce that following an incident at Ballanorris during last night’s sidecar qualifying session, Philip Dongworth sustained injuries which have since proved fatal.’
‘Mr Dongworth, 43, from Stanford Bridge, Worcester, was an experienced competitor who had previously raced on the Billown course. Southern 100 MCRC Ltd are in the process of carrying out a full investigation into the circumstances of this tragic incident.’
‘The organisers express their deepest sympathy to his wife, family and friends at this very sad time.’
