A record-breaking lap of the legendary Isle of Man TT course has been named one of the eight ‘moments of the year’ by a leading magazine.
The latest edition of Evo magazine lists eight car-related highlights of 2011, and includes the sensational lap of the Mountain course by Manx rally star Mark Higgins.
Higgins set a new four-wheel lap record during the 2011 TT when he took a Subaru Impreza WRX STi around the 37.7-mile course on closed roads.
After two practice runs, former British Rally Champion Higgins managed to set a new benchmark of 115.356mph average speed.
Evo magazine pays particular attention to the moment Higgins slid the Subaru at the bottom of Bray Hill.
It says:
“Sideways at 150mph on a road lined with garden walls. Normal people would curl up into a ball and wait for the impact. Mark Higgins spent seven very long seconds wrestling his out-of-control Impreza back into a straight line before driving it flat out for another 36 miles round the Isle of Man TT course.”
Other moments of the year listed by Evo include Formula One star and TT fan Mark Webber overtaking double World Champion Fernando Alonso at Spa, the horrific-looking crashes suffered by Allan McNish and Mike Rockenfeller during the Le Mans 24 Hours race and the on and off-track scuffles seen throughout the British Touring Car Championship season.
If you’d like to witness the Subaru lap for yourself, it is available on DVD from the iomtt.com shop priced just £14.99.
