Tributes are being paid to Isle of Man TT regular Luis Carreira after he lost his life in a crash during practice for Saturday’s Macau Grand Prix.

The racer, from Portugal, made his TT debut in 2009 and achieved a best result of 13th during the 2011 Superstock race.

This year, Carreira finished 24th in the Superbike and 22nd in the Superstock events.

Carreira crashed at Fisherman’s Bend during qualifying on Thursday.

In a statement, the Macau Grand Prix Committee said:

“The qualifying session was immediately red flagged. The medical services, a fast intervention vehicle, fully equipped, and an ambulance with two doctors in attendance, which were located at the side of the accident immediately went to the rider’s aid, and as a result of the doctors’ diagnosis, Mr. Carreira was immediately evacuated by ambulance to the hospital, where he was admitted at 16.08.”

“Continuous CPR was performed, however he succumbed to his injuries at 16.28.”

“The Macau Grand Prix Committee has contacted the family and the members of the team, and the Committee expresses its sincere condolences.”

The incident saw the qualifying session abandoned.

His death has shocked road racing, with 19-times TT winner John McGuinness, who was taking part in the session, among those to take to Twitter to pay respects.

Conor Cummins said he had been ‘shocked’ by the news, while Ian Hutchinson said it was ‘very sad news’ and added “my thoughts go out to his family and friends”.

Ben Wylie Tweeted ‘really sad to hear the news about Luis Carreira, he was a great rival to me and Steve Mercer in all of our first TT and a top guy. RIP mate”.

Maria Costello said ‘so sad to hear about Luis Carreira. Thoughts are with his family and friends’ and TT commentator and former racer James Whitham added ‘a sad loss to any paddock. A talented rider, but more than that a genuinely nice bloke! Gods speed Luis!”

Isle of Man Government TT and Motorsport Development Manager Paul Phillips added ‘such sad news about Luis. One of the nicest men I have ever met in motorcycling. A real gentleman and a very talented rider”.

Fellow TT racer Nuno Caetano, also from Portugal, has said he will withdraw from the Macau GP following his friend’s death.
