Speed junkie, motorcycle racer and lorry mechanic Guy Martin loves pushing the boundaries of speed in search of a buzz.
So much so, he’s back with a second series of Speed with Guy Martin in which he takes on four new speed based challenges.
Whether it’s racing a motorbike at altitude or breaking the speed record for a hovercraft, Guy will seek to find out what makes things go fast by getting his hands dirty in a range of unique engineering projects.
To do this, he will have to harness cutting edge science, learn new skills and call on the support of some of the unsung heroes of British industry using the best of our design and engineering talent.
In the first challenge, Guy gets get back on a push bike to see just how far it’s possible for a human being to cycle during 24 hours of non-stop pedalling.
With the help of bicycle brainiacs Miles Kingsbury and Mike Burrows, the man who designed Chris Boardman’s gold medal winning Lotus bike from the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, he builds a revolutionary tandem and pairs up with friend and endurance expert Jason Miles to try and ride further than any pair have ever managed before.
Guy visits the Bol d’Or, a 24 hour endurance motorbike race in France, to see what kind of impact a full day’s racing can have on the body and mind, before teaming up again with Jason to see just how far they can push their bodies at the Extreme Environments Laboratory at the University of Portsmouth.
In the build up to the final record attempt at the historic Goodwood Motor Circuit, Guy also learns about the science of cooking for athletes with Head of Nutrition at Team Sky, Nigel Mitchell, and works out the best ways of relieving himself on the move to save vital seconds for the attempt.
Guy’s new Speed series starts on Sunday 26th October at 8pm on Channel 4.
