Guy on an Indian Enfield

TT star Guy Martin's new TV show kicks off on Channel 4 on Sunday.

The lorry mechanic, motorbike racer and daredevil goes out of his comfort zone and experience an India that is home to a relentless tradition of technical innovation and endless contrasts.

However, to begin with, Guy will feel at home in at least one respect.

India is the spiritual home of the motorbike, and Guy’s journey begins in Delhi, at the world famous Karol Bagh motorcycle market, where he acquires a classic Royal Enfield bike, manufactured in India for decades.

After that, Guy hits the road, rail and even the air, on a two part journey around the world’s second most populous country.

The two one-hour programmes reflect all aspects of modern India - including the elements of its economy which are thriving, its grand traditions and its still inescapable poverty.

In episode one, Guy starts by experiencing the urban sprawl of Delhi and its surrounding area.

He then head north, via overnight train and mountain roads, to Dharamsala, home to tea plantations, paragliding and the Dalai Lama.

In episode two, Guy heads south and takes in the startling contrasts of India’s biggest city, Mumbai, before embarking on a road and boat trip down to Goa, where he participates in the biggest ever gathering of Royal Enfield motorbikes, owners and enthusiasts – and attempts to become the first Brit to win the event’s climactic big race .

Showing on Channel from 9pm, Sunday 1st of February.
