With five TT wins during a racing career which included a double F2 world championship in 1985 and 1986, Brian Reid first rode in the TT in 1981. He previously raced in the Manx Grand Prix between 1978 and 1980 where his best place was runner-up in the 1980 Senior.
His first TT ‘netted’ him a retirement in the Junior 250 and a 19th place in the Senior along with his first Bronze Replica. Gaining his first Silver Replica in 1982 for fourth place in the 250 race, the Ulsterman collected a further Bronze for ninth in the Senior.
1983 was a year to be forgotten – three starts resulted in three D.N.F.s. The following year was not quite as bad with two finishes out of four races - third in the 250 and fourth in the Senior. 1985 once again proved to be a disappointing year with three retirements and a 21st in the Senior.
Fortunes were to change twelve months later, as the Banbridge man took his first victory in the Formula Two race. He held the lead from start to finish with a new race record of 109.72 mph and a new lap record at 11.75 mph. His joy was short lived however, for a spill at Ballaugh Bridge during the Junior Race put him out for some weeks.
Brian’s luck deserted him once more in 1987 – two races and two retirements although it was back with him again in 1988 as he completed all four races he entered: Production D – 3rd; F1- 10th; Junior 250 – 2nd and Senior 18th. The TT beckoned again in 1989, but it was a disastrous event.
A new decade brought Brian his second win, this time in the Supersport 600 and he took fifth place in the SS400. 1991 was yet again a no result year for the Dromore rider with three starts and three retirements.
However, ‘Speedie Reidie’ as he had become known made up for the disappointment of the previous year, by achieving a double victory in 1992. Firstly winning the Supersport 400 race, then the Junior 250 – both on Loctite Yamaha machines. He luck deserted him though in the F1 and SS600 TTs.
The 1993 TT saw Brian again on the top step of the podium with a win in the Junior 250cc. He was 4th in the SS400 class and in the Senior, once again riding his 250 he came home 21st, the second 250 to finish. Brian rode well in 1994 on Winston McAdoo’s Yamaha taking second place in the Junior.
Sadly his career was brought to a premature end when he was involved in a serious accident at the Temple 100, suffering a badly broken leg and arm, his worst ever crash, which ultimately forced him to retire from the sport.
