Biography
Robert Millington Knowles
In a very brief summary: he was a member of a prominent Lancashire mine-owning family.
Born in 1893, he went up to Cambridge (Trinity College) in 1912, but broke off his studies at the outbreak of World War One and took a commission in the Special Reserve Battalion of the Norfolk Regiment. He served two years in the trenches then transferred to the Royal Flying Corps.
He was severely wounded when he was shot down in flames, and he was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.). He never fully recovered his health and lived in retirement until his death in 1950. He was twice married and had three sons, two of when died in World War Two.
We know from his obituary that he was an enthusiastic pioneer of motor racing and rode as an amateur in TT races. He also raced his Rolls at Brooklands in 1912.
