Biography

Steve Palmer was born in Peterborough in 1920 and started racing motor cycles in 1947. His first racing bike was a pre-war Manx Norton bought with the help of a loan from the bank. He kept the bike in the lounge at home!

He raced throughout the UK between 1947 and 1958 on all the circuits of the era on his self-prepared Manx Nortons with the help of many friends and the local motorcycle dealer Stokes & Glazebrook Motors Ltd of Northampton.

One of his most cherished memories was finishing the 1956 Junior Manx Grand Prix on his 350 Manx Norton. This was his only finish on the Island.

Steve finished his motorcycle racing career riding a BSA Gold Star and an NSU.

After his daughter Wendy was born he went on to participate in car rallies in the 1960s driving a Mini Cooper with his son Steve Junior navigating.

He retired to Norfolk in 1983 and after a number of illnesses died in 1996. His wife Mary died in September 2002 after losing her fight against cancer.
