Biography

John was tipped to win the Manx in 1961, but was paralysed in 1978 at Aberdare Park Races when they resumed racing after many years. He won most of the races in the day but was in a first lap pile up in the final of the day, when Barry Needle crashed off in front of the leading bunch. When John got up to run he was hit by the tail enders, and amazingly survived horrific injuries. He was awarded the Welsh Championship cup. He still survives to date living in Magor S.Wales with wife Carol. Information kindly supplied by Phil Chappell, nephew of John. His father Chris was John’s mechanic in 1977 when he finished 12th in the MGP.
