Biography

Truly a ‘one-off’ hero John Surtees is the only man to ever win a World Drivers’ Championship on two and four wheels. Altogether Surtees competed in 15 TT races and finished in all except the 1956 Junior. He rode Nortons first in 1954 finishing 11th in the Junior and 15th in the Senior. He turned to MV Agusta in 1956 and his record reads - 1956 Senior 1st, 1957 Junior 4th, Senior 2nd, 1958 Junior and Senior 1st, a feat he repeated in 1959, and 1960 Senior 1st and Junior 2nd. An enviable record! At the end of the 1960 season, Surtees decided to finish his motorcycling career and turned to four wheels, going on to win the F1 World Drivers Championship. His immaculate style and preparation of his racing machines was a winning combination; his speed on track and sportsmanship off it made him a well-loved and popular figure.
