Biography

Luigi Taveri’s international career started in 1954 on 350cc and 500c privately owned Nortons; he was also a passenger to Hans Haldemann in the Sidecar grands prix. Approached by MV for the 1955 season, the little Swiss had his first outing on the Clypse Course at that years TT. It was to be one of mixed fortunes, retiring in the Lightweight 250cc race, then taking second place in the Lightweight 125cc TT. He subsequently became a works rider for Ducati, MZ and Kreidler before joining the Honda factory in 1961. On the little 125-twin he came home second to Mike Hailwood in the three-lap race. Nineteen Sixty-two saw him score the first of a total of three victories on the Mountain Course in the Lightweight 125 TT, setting a race record of 89.88 mph in the process as he headed off team mates Tommy Robb and Tom Phillis. His second win came two years later, again in the 125 category, yet again increasing the race record to 02.14 mph and setting a new lap record at 95.53mph on the 4-cylinder 125 Honda. The ever-popular Taveri gained his third and final TT victory twelve months later in the 50cc TT, ahead of the Suzuki opposition of Hugh Anderson and Ernst Degner. Luigi gained eight Silver and one Bronze Replica during his TT career, whilst achieving the distinction of World Champion in the 125cc class three times in 1962, 1964 and 1964.
