Tribute to 'unsung heroes'

The chairman of the Joey Dunlop Foundation has thanked the ‘unsung heroes of the TT’ for the supporting the charity.

Kevin Quirk has praised sidecar crews for unstinting support for the foundation, which is raising funds to build accommodation in Douglas for visitors to the Isle of Man with disabilities. It will be named in honour of 26-times TT winner Joey Dunlop.

He said the sidecar fraternity has always taken second place to the solo riders despite the heroic performances of the current stars and those of the past.

However, he added, during the past 18 months, sidecar crews have offered tremendous support to the foundation, through involvement in fundraising events, and it was time their hard work was brought to the public’s attention.

Mr Quirk said:

‘Klaus Klaffenbock is a superstar. In January 2007 he flew to the Island to attend a Night with Klaffi, where he was supported by Nick Crowe, TT legend Dave Molyneux and their passengers. In March, Klaffi and Nick took time out from preparing for Klaus’s debut at Jurby and attended a fundraising event.’
‘The TT Festival was a busy period not only for the charity, but also for Nick and Klaus, Nick setting the outright lap record while poor Klaus had several engine failures. However, during their spare time Klaus and his sponsors Manx Gas raised £2,825 for JDF.’

He added:

‘Due to public demand Klaus returned to the Island last weekend when we had a second Night with Klaffi. This event raised £1,742. Again he was supported by Nick, Rob Fisher (10 times TT Winner) and Tim Reeves, the current sidecar World Champion.’
‘In addition to attending our various functions, these riders have provided many valuable items for auction – Nick Crowe and his employer Andy Faragher demolished our old house in Victoria Road – and all of them have promised further support in 2008, with Tim promising a superb prize which will be auctioned when he makes his debut at TT 2008.’
‘Next time you watch these heroes racing around the TT course, give them a cheer and a wave for all the support they are giving to “Joeys Charity”. Finally, thank you to all our supporters and I wish them all in the best in 2008.’
