Ewen McGregor Haldane.
Arrived Menstrie, Clackmannanshire, on 29.6.29, but was not involved with motorcycles until early teenage. There were many models of all makes, and ranged from early twenties onwards; carbide lights, rim brakes etc.
Had a go at Trials and Scrambling, but found that Track Racing was less
strenuous, thus, mark you, and relatively so, on "bed ends" on wheels.
My two pals mooted a go at the Clubman’s and, somewhat loathed, I, with the greatest of reservations, agreed to accompany them. Backed up by that superb business of hire purchase, we entered for the 1953 Junior event, and enjoyed a huge measure of non-success.
Things were to improve in the following years and this led on to the
blessedness of sponsorship. Much could be written about our trials regarding the raising of cash prior to sponsorship. Nothing illegal, of
There is an achievement that may not have been bettered by any other rider and that being the fact that, only on one occasion, I entered a slip road and this having competed in 15 TT events covering Clubman’s, MGPs and TTs. Not even when I did my stints at travelling marshall!
My present mount is a 'Pegaso' and I have had this for six years. Arm
chair comfort with fantastic handling.
My small motorcycle business keeps me out of my dear wife's hair, and the only other interest of any great demand is Greenock Wanderers' Rugby Club.
Reminiscing does bring some embarrassment. To my sadly deceased sponsors, Messrs. Tyson, Robertson and Dearden, I owed a great deal. I had an absolutely marvellous time and my thanks also goes to those who made competitions possible.
One final point, asked as I often have been if I ever won an I.O.M. race, I am happy to reply with the excuses of Bob McIntyre, Geoff Duke, John Surtees, Mike Hailwood and a host of other stars of that Golden
Era........ but I did try!!
