Biography

Dave Browning was a boisterous youngster and decided he wanted to try motorcycle racing after seeing a BSA Gold Star in his father’s car dealership. Jack his father had bought the Beeza off local road racer Roger Corbett in 1963and the young Browning showed great promise on the machine, to such am extent that a new Greeves Silverstone was purchased.

1965 saw him sponsored on a Gloucester built Cotton Telstar gaining many wins in the process, eventually being ‘poached’ by the Herring Yamaha team, going on to win the British 250cc Championship.

Dave’s father bought him a 500cc Manx Norton, he also had outings on such exotica as the Egli Vincent and Alpha Centuri!

As well as all the British short circuits and the TT races, he rode many international circuits.

A most memorable ride was an endurance race in Alicante in Spain, despite falling off his Cotton Conquest he kicked his machine straight and went on to finish, The Spanish crowd was so taken with his entertaining ride they raised money for the repair of the bike!

A car accident in 1974 left Dave with serious head injuries stopping many more years of his promising racing career. Cotswold Headway did much to bring back Dave to some normality, with him running their newsletter for many years.

Dave Browning, 59, died of a massive heart attack 4th April 2004.
