James Courtney commenced his Snaefell Mountain Course racing career in spectacular fashion, winning the 1992 MMCC Newcomers Race at record speed. Completing his debut rides with a 10th in the Junior Manx Grand Prix and 3rd in the Lightweight - all on his 250cc Irish Racing Yamaha.
Due to ride in the 1993 TT, his debut was postponed due to a racing spill in his native Ulster.
James decided to gain more Mountain experience by entering the 1993 Manx Grand Prix. He returned home with victories in both Junior and Lightweight Grands Prix.
The Crumlin man finally made his TT debut in 1994 and did not disappoint, gaining a well earned 7th place in the Junior race, although he was forced to retire in the Ultra Lightweight when the little Honda ceased to function.
1995 was to prove what an up and coming road racing competitor James was, finishing 3rd in the Ultra Lightweight, 24th in the Junior and a magnificent runner-up spot to Joey Dunlop in the Lightweight race.
Looking forward to 1996 all turned to doom and gloom as a pre season practice spill at Kirkistown put James out for the majority of the season.
1997 look good with early season success at home. A harmless looking practice spill at the North West ‘200’ once again prevented him from competing in the Isle of Man.
Back racing at the Isle of Man for the first time since 1995, James picked up where he left off by taking a further two rostrum third positions in the Formula One and Senior TT’s on the RC45 Tillstons Honda. Additionally he was 11th in the Junior and 4th in the Lightweight.
1999 again got off to a good result with 4th in the opening Formula One TT, on the Reve Red Bull Ducati.
Two days later disaster struck in the Lightweight TT, coming off his 250cc machine in the Lightweight Race, suffering leg injuries that took many months to heal.
James was back at the TT in 2000, once again riding his Ducati taking 14th and 22nd places in the Formula One and Senior TT’s.
