Biography

John Robert Taylor made his sidecar TT debut in 1978. With passenger Kenny Arthur on their Yamaha outfit they finished second in the debut race, backing that up with a third in the second race. Jock’s luck was not to be repeated in 1979, collecting his only D.N.F of his TT career in the first of the two sidecar races and coming home 16th in the second. New passenger, Benga Johansson assisted in the team achieving second place to Trevor Ireson in the first of the races in 1980. Going one better in the second to take their first victory. In both races they set the fastest lap! The end of the season saw them Sidecar World Champions. 1981 saw race and lap records broken as the Scots/Swedish pairing sped to what was to be the first part of a double win. The following year was to be one of mixed fortunes, starting as favourites, they hit major problems on the opening lap, eventually finishing 18th. Jock and Benga made up for their disappointment in the second race by taking the chequered flag ahead of husband and wife team of Dennis and Julia Bingham. Setting a new lap record at 108.29 mph in the process. As it turned out it was to be their last TT, as Jock was killed at the Finnish Grand Prix at Imatra later on in the year.
