Biography

Norman Tavernor Bennett was born in Stoke on Trent on the 10th June 1904. The only son of Harold and Hannah Bennett. On completion of formal schooling he served his apprenticeship in motor engineering under his father and joined his father's garage business in Stoke. He was eventually made a partner in the business Harold Bennett & Son. His reputation for honesty, good work and skill caused the business to expand. His personal passion was for motor cycle events, rallies and trials in Staffordshire and Cheshire and his trail of successes brought him many awards. He was noted as a true sportsman with a pleasant personality. This interest in motorcycles brought him into contact with other motorcycle enthusiasts and he obtained work tuning the local Speedway motorcycles. Turning to road racing his ambition was to enter the Isle of Man TT that he did in June 1933. He rode a Norton 350 cc motorcycle private owned, rebuilt and tuned by himself. As an amateur he was up against the professional teams. He completed the gruelling course attaining 11th position for which he received a Silver Replica. It is understood that the Norton Team were interested in recruiting him. Alas on the 11th October 1933, a little later in the same year of his Isle of Man TT entry he was killed in a road accident at Strongford Bridge, near Stone, Staffordshire. He left a young wife and a twenty two month old son. (kindly contributed by Peter Bennett)
