TT 1960
All races switched to the Snaefell Mountain Course in 1960 and the Italian MV Agusta team were once again victorious in all four solo classes.
John Surtees led the way in the six lap Senior with a faultless ride on the four-cylinder 'fire engine'. He led from start to finish in perfect conditions and raised the lap record to 104.08mph.
It turned out to be his last TT before going on to a successful career in car racing. It was an apt swansong.
His teammate John Hartle fought off the growling Nortons to finish second, with Mike Hailwood heading the pursuers in third place.
Surtees's luck ran out in the six lap Junior, which resulted in a popular first-time TT victory for Hartle. Surtees was ahead for the first four laps, but slowed when he lost third gear. Hartle took full advantage to win easily, with Surtees holding off Bob McIntyre after another superb ride by the Scotsman on the Joe Potts AJS.
Rhodesian Gary Hocking joined MV in 1960, just a year after his TT debut, and was an impressive winner of the five-lap Lightweight race, leading throughout in front of another all-Italian epic between Carlo Ubbiali and Tarquinio Provini. On the last lap Ubbiali, riding for MV, smashed the lap record to pip the Morini of his great rival.
Ubbiali made his intensions clear right from the start of the three-lap Ultra-Lightweight race by shattering the lap record from a standing start. The race turned into an MV benefit, with Hocking second and Taveri, who had joined MV from MZ third.
Sidecar racing returned to the Mountain for the first time since 1925, but the outcome was predictable: more success for BMW. However, they did have problems, with both Florian Camathias, who led until breaking down on the last lap, and former winner Fritz Scheidegger being non-finishers.
Their misfortune gave Helmut Fath his first TT victory. Pip Harris, also using BMW power, was second, while Charlie Freeman battled on to secure third place on his Norton powered outfit.
