Spannerman,
You say this list is "often asked for". I have to ask if that's really true, and if it is, why?
I agree wholeheartedly with Chris Heyes.
We all have known, and many have witnessed, people who have lost their lives in this sport that we love. I just don't see the purpose of your list. I'm afraid I don't see it as a "fitting memorial", I see it as an unneccesary reminder to those on this site who have lost loved ones and are all too aware of the dangers of the TT.
Regards,
Juan

Hi Chris (Heyes),
Yes it is such a sad list to read, and many sympathies for the loss you and other families suffered.
Regarding the list/book, I really can see both sides of the coin. I feel sad that these guys and girls aren't always remembered very well around TT/MGP time, and sometimes when one sees an almost anonymous flower wreath on the course, for me there is a feeling, almost of guilt, that you are there enjoying an event that took somebodys life, and in th esame thought you wish you knew more of the life of the person it pays tribute to. Reading that list made me feel sad, yes; but it also bought back really fond memories of riders I'd known; some who I'd followed as a fan, some who I had encountered in the racing scene, and some whose names are indelibly etched in my memory for whatever reason.
I cant even begin to imagine what it's like for anyone to lose a family member in the public gaze; an extra burden I would guess, so I completely understand why its so painful to you.
Steve

I think the book would be a fitting tribute to so many who have lost there lives on the mountain course, I have often thought of the poor riders who lost there lives in a practice, before they even had a chance to race, these riders never make a name for themselves, only there family remembers them. If it were my family member who was lost, i would want them to also be remembered with the famous riders. We should all know who they were, and a little about them, what brought them to this most dangerous race. I always arrive for race week, but i have been following the practice at home, when i hear a new rider has lost his life in practice, i personally think, well who was he? where did he come from? what caused him to crash? We should all remember these riders, not just the one we know. Thats why i support the idea of this book. My sympathys go out to all the familys who have lost a loved on this list.

For everyone's information, we have received the following email from the TT & MGP Memorial Wall Committee:
There is a
permanent memorial to all competitors who have lost their lives in the TT &
MGP (Practises & Races). It is
situated in Douglas
Borough Cemetery
adjacent to the start and finish line. It was erected so the
families could put a plaque up in memory of their loved ones and also
somewhere for them to visit to leave flowers and have a quiet few minutes.
If anyone
would like to know more please contact me on 07624 433540. TT & MGP Memorial Wall Committee

As somebody who has lost a loved one on the TT course, I whole heartedly lend my support to the idea of the book. I have read Sigurd's article about my father and I would love to see it put into print. When I see his name in a list like this I dont feel empty at all, I am proud of him and what he achieved in the isle of man, and in many ways I cant think of a better way for him to have gone, of course it is sad for all of us left behind, and i'm gutted he never got to win a race there after coming so close on may occasions, but i would like him to be remembered for what he achieved on the TT course and all of this is detailed in Sigurd's articles.
I think that anyone who truly understands why their loved on wanted to race on the TT course would be happy for the book to be published.

171 Paul Fargher was killed in the 1995 Sidecar A Race. Paul was with Bob Munro and started at No31 and I was with his brother Steve and we started at 71.
We rode past the accident but did not reaslise who was involved and the Family/Race Organisers took the decision that if we did not realise and pull in ourselves that they would let us finish the race.
Sadly that was Steves one and only TT.
We were preparing for the 1996 event...in fact I was travelling back from my honeymoon to be back on the island for first practise. My mum was at Leeds AP to meet me and told me I was coming back to her place for the night. I explained that I had to be back on the Island but she told me that Steve's other brother, Malcolm, had been killed in a Road Accident while I was away.
RIP Lads, was always fun to race against you both.

FitzJnr, thanks for the post about Paul and Malcom (and Steve)
A little off topic, but a thread appeared on these forums regarding a spectator
who sadly lost his life on the Island whilst visiting the TT from Australia.
The thread makes interesting reading. His friends and family were pleased Geoff Meredith was not forgotten over here.

There may be one missing on officials killed in road accidents If my memory serves me right .John Goldsmith from Sulby died from injuries sustained at Union Mills whilst returning home from a Practice session for the MGP at which he was performing Travelling Marshal duties.Probably late 1950s early 1960s.

I think you are right about Paul Rome....95% of me seems to recall it being Cronk-Ny-Mona.
Exmanxie, I don't think there is anything particularly ghoulish about this list to be honest. It is a fact of life that one day you will die be it of old age, mountaineering, cancer, hose racing, racing motorcycles, being a marshall or any other variations.
I have been lucky to survive a crash at the TT, a crash at the Southern 100 and Cancer but I think the list is actually quite nice to remember those who have not been so lucky and to enable us to recount the nice stories about them instead of remembering them as just being dead.
No offence intended to anyone.
