Formula One star Mark Webber has paid tribute to motorcycle road racers after witnessing his first ever Isle of Man TT race.

Just five days after claiming fourth position at the Monaco Grand Prix, the 31-year-old Australian travelled to the Isle of Man to sample some two-wheel racing.

After spending time around the TT paddock on the Friday of Practice Week, Webber and his dad watched the Dainese Superbike TT from the Grandstand in Douglas the following day.

The Red Bull-Renault driver, who is currently sixth equal in the Formula One World Championship standings with 15 points, was amazed by the skill and bravery of the riders who took to the famous Mountain Circuit for the opening race of the 2008 Isle of Man TT festival.

He said:

‘I’ve always heard of the TT being hugely unique, but, as usual, TV, ‘You-Tube’ etc doesn’t do justice whatsoever to how special the event and the competitors are.’
‘To start with, the course itself is absolutely phenomenal. I’ve been to plenty of race tracks around the world, but to see 37 miles of public roads closed off for racing is just awe-inspiring.’

Webber added:

‘I’ve been to some of the biggest sporting events in the world too, but standing there with my dad it’s the first time I’ve been blown away as a spectator by such an event.’
‘These guys deserve so much more recognition for what they do. People talk about concentration in sport – I would like to see one that rivals what they do!’

Attending the race was extra special for Webber and his dad, as they had the honour of watching compatriot Cameron Donald become the first Australian since Graeme McGregor in 1984.

Donald continued his great form on Monday with victory in the Scottish Life International Superstock TT.

Unfortunately, Webber, who is now in his seventh season in Formula One, couldn’t stay to watch more racing as he had to jet to Montreal, where he will race alongside Red Bull-Renault teammate David Coulthard at the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday.
