Peter an environmental engineer from Manchester started road racing in the late 50’s riding on various specials built by Bert Foster and then bought one of the first Greeves RAS Silverstone’s.
A founder member of Darley Moor MCRC he rode in five TT’s, the first being the 1967 Diamond Jubilee in the 250cc Lightweight class on a loaned DMW Hornet. He finished 27th, the race being won by Mike Hailwood on the works Honda 6.
Memories of this TT were being helped out with engine parts by Peter Williams when the big end seized in practice and sat next to Mike Hailwood in the waiting area at the start of the race who kindly gave tips and advice.
Returning a year later, Peter took his own Greeves RCS Silverstone over to the Island for the 1968 TT but failed to finish when the gearbox seized on the down to Quarter Bridge on the first lap.
For the 1969 TT he took a new Greeves RES Silverstone over and after a trouble free run in the 250cc race finished 25th and last out of 102 starters.
The 1970 TT was Peters best, again entered in the Lightweight race on the well sorted Greeves, he was the only British bike to finish and received a Bronze Replica at an average speed was just under 80 mph. Kel Carruthers won the race at a speed of 96.13 mph on the works Yamaha. Peter’s time could have been better but he was slowed right down being first to arrive at the tragic crash of Herrero at the 13th milestone losing momentum and time. Obvious highlight of this year was winning and collecting the Bronze Replica.
Remember that riders in the Lightweight 250cc class in the TT had to do 6 laps up to and including the 1970 event.
Returning back to the TT in 1971 entering the Lightweight 250 class with his Greeves he finished 35th and was the only British bike in the results.
