Biography
Six times a winner, Guthrie made his debut in 1923 on a Matchless. He competed in the Junior but retired. His first victory came seven years later in the 1930 Lightweight Race on an A.J.S. Guthrie was a Norton works rider from 1931 to 1937 and completed a Junior/Senior double in 1934. In 1937 he took a popular win in the Junior, but his Senior Race ended at the Cutting with a retirement. Later on that same year Guthrie was killed while competing in the German Grand Prix. A Memorial was built at the point on the climb up the Mountain where he retired in his last TT Race. It is a fitting tribute to a man who had a tremendous career both at the TT and on the Continent, and on a clear day the coastline of Jimmy’s native Scotland can be seen from here.
