Biography

Aussie, Kel Carruthers, not only had back-to-back wins in the Lightweight 250 TT’s of 1969 and 1970, they were both start to finish victories, albeit on vastly different types of machine. Riding an Italian 4-cylinder Benelli in 1969 he set a new race record at 95.95 mph putting up the fastest lap of the race at 99.01 mph. Going onto to win the coveted 250cc world championship for himself and the Benelli concern. It was to be the last four-stroke victory in the 250cc TT and world championship. The following year, 1970, this time on a twin-cylinder ‘production’ Yamaha, Kel recorded a race speed of 96.13 mph, once again setting the fastest lap at 98.04 mph Apart from his two TT wins, a second, third, two fifths, and a sixth place count amongst his Mountain Course results.
