Biography
Hi, This is John Cowie, now aged 54 and living in Darwin Australia.
I am ashamed to say that my Island record is poor and after a few mediocre Manx Grand Prix rides I never managed to complete a TT after 3 attempts. Despite this I am so honoured to have been part of the Islands race heritage and look back with great enjoyment on my trips to the MGP and TT.
In the later years of my racing in the late 70''s, I managed to coincide with the great Mike Hailwood’s return to racing and as he had been my great hero for years, I was so proud of appearing on the grid with him at the Post TT Mallory meeting and later the Formula 1 support race at the Silverstone GP.
At Mallory I qualified on pole on the Peckett and McNab Kawasaki and got whopped by Mike on his Ducati in the race. A pleasure to circulate behind him and see what a smooth racer he was.
At Silverstone the late Tom Herron on the Mocheck Honda joined us and the three of us took turns to lead. The top speed of Toms and my bike proved too much for Mikes Ducati and I managed to pip Tom on the line for victory by 200th of a second.
I shall never forget being on the podium with Tom Herron who I had great respect for, and Mike Hailwood who was the best rider I have ever seen.
I retired in 1978 after clinching the Formula 1 title for Peckett and McNab, a superb pair of engineers and great guys, as I damaged my elbow at the season closer at Brands Hatch and now cannot bend it.
Shortly after emigrating to Australia in 2000 my son started road racing and is currently leading the Northern Territory Club Championships and wishing he could return to Britain for the Yamaha R6 Cup. Maybe.
Kind regards to all and thanks for the years of pleasure the IOM has given me.
