Biography
Billy’s first appearance at the TT was in 1960 when he rode a 350 AJS 7R in the Junior and after fitting new tyres and chain, also rode the same machine in the Senior. The following year he again rode the Junior on a 350 AJS 7R and after several impressive lap times, was selected onto the Matchless team for the Senior on a 500cc G50. The other members selected for the team were Ron Langston and Derek Powell, who along with Billy, picked up the Manufacturers award.
Billy’s best finishes included two top six placings in the 1964 and the 1965 Senior TT Races, both aboard 500cc Matchless G50s. Having competed his entire career on excellently turned out machines, all his TT attempts were ridden against more superior factory machinery with the races holding World Championship status. Having by then moved to the now more competitive Japanese machinery towards the end of his career, Billy rode his final TT in 1975 aboard a 350cc Yamaha in the Junior and a 500cc Suzuki in the Senior races of that year.
