Biography
Arthur Bates, born 1916. Telephone Engineer. Lived in Stockport, England until 1955 when the family moved to New Zealand to live.
Started racing at age 16 on grass road circuit trials in the Cheshire Centre.
In 1950 raced in the IOMTT Junior Clubman’s race on a Douglas motorcycle to place 27th and in 1951 raced in the Senior Clubmans on a BSA. Did not finish due to machine bursting into flames after the 2nd lap pit stop.
Rode at Oswestry, Rhydymwyn, Altcar, Oulton Park, Donington, Scarborough, Chirk Castle, Trentham Park, Saltburn Southport, Wallasey and Pendine Sands, Dunholm aerodrome, Cadwell Park, and Anstey aerodrome.
Still going strong, living in Upper Hutt, near Wellington, New Zealand.
