Biography

Peter Burns had a happy introduction to the TT, finishing 22nd in his debut ride in 1951, despite his machine having no compression and stretched valves.

The following year on another BSA, which according to Peter would not go where it was pointed and rode like a camel he came home in 23rd position out of 105 starters.

It was not to be third time lucky for Peter and his BSA machine in 1953. A 'comfortable' machine, but with no top speed, he nevertheless managed to be placed on the Leader Board twice during practice, despite only managing a top speed of 93mph on Sulby Straight.

Tactics on Race Day included a Pit Stop at the end of the first lap, to carry less weight at the end of the race. Overshot pit by 60-metres, when in 3rd position with a time of 28m 36s. Dropped to 16th on lap 2 due to the pit delay time.

Back on the Leader Board in 6th position at the end of the third lap, improving all the way along the course on the final lap, climbing the Mountain in second or third place, only to 'find' some loose gravel at the Stonebreakers Hut and crash!

Thanks to Peter for his TT Experience.
