Biography
Ulster’s only World Champion Ralph Bryans first rode in the Junior TT of 1962. It was to be an inauspicious start, retiring his Norton during the six-lap race.
In the inaugural 50cc TT he managed to bring home the miniature Benelli machine home in 15th place.
Gaining the first of seven Silver Replicas for ninth place in the 1963 Ultra Lightweight TT on a Honda provided by Fron Purslow.
Having been brought into the ‘official’ Honda squad Ralph achieved a pair of podium placings in the 125cc and 50cc TT’s of 1964 – third and second respectively – particularly enjoying riding the 125 four cylinder bike.
Nineteen Sixty-five saw mixed fortunes with a sixth in the 125 and a D.N.F. in the ‘tiddler’ class.
Even so, he did enough in the other Grands Prix during the year to clinch the 50vv World Championship.
The delayed TT of 1966 was the pinnacle of Ralph’s TT career, winning the three lap 50cc TT at a record average speed on 87.70 mph on the magnificent twin cylinder machine which revved to 22,000!
The Ulsterman’s final TT outing was the Diamond Jubilee races in 1967, riding the fabulous six-cylinder 250 Honda into third place behind Mike Hailwood and Phil Read.
