Biography
Welsh born Rhodesian Gary Hocking, had a brief but impressive TT career, even though it lasted only four years!
Riding a Dearden Norton in the Junior TT of 1959, he finished a creditable 12th. The following year he returned riding for the pride of the Italian factories – MV Agusta, taking victory in the Lightweight TT, despite the challenge from the fledgling Honda concern.
1961 was to prove a frustrating year, with only a best placing of second in the Junior, behind a Norton mounted Phil Read.
Nineteen Sixty-two was to prove to be Gary’s final year at the TT, despite securing his second win, this time in the ‘blue-riband’ Senior Race on the four cylinder fire engine.
The death of his close friend and rival Tom Phillis brought bout the Rhodesian’s retirement from the sport. Taking up car racing in South Africa, he himself was tragically killed in a racing accident some six months later.
