Biography
Alan Holmes will be best remembered for his record breaking rides during the 1957 Manx Grand Prix, when he became the first Manxman to win the Junior and Senior races; a feat not equalled by another Manxman until 1994, when Peel’s Brian Venables claimed victory in both races.
Alan was born and bred in Castletown and began his racing career at Andreas Airfield in 1953, winning first time out! Entering the Manx later in the year.
Joining Castrol in 1954 necessitated moved to England, where his still lives, in semi retirement in Southport.
After achieving the ‘double’ in ’57, Alan went on to the TT in 1958, riding a brace of ‘works’ Nortons, with world champion Keith Campbell, as his teammate.
His racing career came to an abrupt end at the final meeting of the 1958 season at Oulton Park, when he came off the Norton at Island Bend, suffering a fractured scull, which resulted in double vision, which has plagued him ever since.
To summarise Alan Holmes ‘Manx’ career, he entered eight races, finishing in five, collecting five replicas, setting three record laps and was a member of the winning Club Team on three occasions. Alan was awarded the Lady Hill Rose Bowl, for the best performance by a Manxman in 1957.
