Biography

The 1935 picture is of J Kelly Swanston just after winning the 1935 Senior Manx Grand Prix (having beaten Freddie Frith with the lap record). He is pictured with John Williamson, his mechanic.

That win was to be his last race before he gave up to become a GP in Thirsk, North Yorkshire (at the same time as a certain vet called James Herriot).

The 2002 photo was taken in September at his home in Yorkshire where he lives with his wife Molly.

From the stories he tells, it was a very different Manx Grand Prix back then! One rider and his mechanic, push starts and shoestring budgets!
