A charity event has been organised to help an Isle of Man TT winner as he continues his rehabilitation following major surgery.
Road racing superstar Eddie Laycock was diagnosed with cancer just over three years ago and, over the festive period, his left leg was amputated at St Vincent’s Hospital, Merrion.
Eddie’s friends have formed The Eddie Laycock Trust to assist him and his family during his rehabilitation.
The first event takes place on Saturday, February 13th, at Citywest Hotel, Saggart, Co. Dublin. The organisers said it will be a chance to meet some friends and ‘blasts from the past’.
There will be a four course meal, late bar, entertainment and several special guests lined up. Tickets are 100 euro and are available from Susan Reilly, EMS, Blessington Road, Saggart. Email emsservice@eircom.net
Eddie, who lives in Templeogue with wife Helen and their two young boys, is universally recognised as one of the best exponents of the sport to come out of Ireland.
As well as an amazing racing career, Eddie is also part of the MotoGP commentary team with Peter Collins on RTE.
In 1987, Eddie won the Junior TT - the first Southern rider to do so since the legendary Reg Armstrong 30 years earlier. The same year he finished second in the Formula 2 race and in 1988 he won the production 250 TT and moved on to the top of world motorcycling when he raced in the 500 GP class.
There was more TT success in 1989, with victory in the Supersport 400. Eddie also enjoyed many success at the other international road races, including wins at the Ulster Grand Prix and North West 200.
