Lee Johnston lifted his first Steve Henshaw Gold Cup Trophy with victory in a drenched blue riband solo race at Oliver’s Mount, the penultimate round of the Duke Road Race Rankings Championship 2019.

Lee was following in the tyre tracks of Ryan Farquhar and Michael Dunlop, the only other Ulstermen to have lifted the prestigious trophy.

The Ashcourt Racing rider led the entire eight-lap scrap from lights-to-flag, while Mike Norbury finished just a few seconds back as his closest challenger.

Johnston powered off the line from pole position beside Norbury and Joey Thompson, but by the time they got up the hill it was Johnston in control as Norbury settled into second with David Jackson in a distant third and Thompson battling with Brad Vicars and Stephen Parsons for a top four spot.

Spada Racing’s Norbury made a strong charge behind Johnson to limit his damage to less than four seconds, but in the end could only manage the runner-up spot as Johnson had a clear run to the chequered flag with just under three seconds to spare for his maiden Gold Cup victory.

Meanwhile, Street Diner rider David Jackson crossed the line a lone third some 33sec off the lead, while VRS Racing’s Vicars got the better of Trickbits Triumph-mounted Thompson and Joe Ackroyd to take fourth.
