As previously announced, TT Zero is a one-lap clean emissions race which will run as part of the 2010 Isle of Man TT programme. It is scheduled to start at 4.30pm on June 9, after the second Supersport and second Sidecar races.
TT Zero will build on the success of the TTXGP event held during last year’s TT, however the TTXGP promoters are no longer involved. Instead, the Isle of Man’s Department of Tourism and Leisure will be the promoters, with ACU Events Ltd running the event using the latest FIM regulations.
A spokesman for the TT said:
‘The Isle of Man Government has decided to upgrade the status of the clean emissions race by giving it the same status as all other TT classes, giving class entrants access to prize and travel funds that were not previously available.’
‘The Isle of Man Government will operate these races as part of the TT meeting with the clean emissions class being a key class within the TT Races.’
The spokesman’s statement also clarified aspects of the TT Zero plan which had been the subject of inaccurate information.
He said:
‘The Isle of Man Government and its respective event partners played a significant role in the running of the inaugural event on the Isle of Man. The Isle of Man Government remains hugely committed to clean emissions motorcycle racing and the decision to run and manage all aspects of the event means that the Clean Emissions TT Zero race will form a core and integral part of the TT races in 2010, benefiting from the prestige of being associated with the TT as well as the event infrastructure.’
‘The event has not, in any way, been downgraded - every day of TT racing is prestigious.’
‘The TT Zero race is completely independent from the FIM’s proposed race series. Although TT Zero will be managed by the Auto Cycle Union (ACU), which is the FIM endorsed governing body of motorcycle racing in the UK, the FIM are not in any way involved with the running of the event.’
The spokesman added:
‘Many teams and riders have welcomed the move and are supportive of the position.’
‘Teams and riders will benefit from the move as they will be supported by a widely experienced team who have a great track record in running race meetings. Teams and riders will benefit from the exposure associated with the TT. As well as extensive global TV coverage produced and distributed by award-winning television company North One TV, the TT is also widely covered by on-line media, specialist titles and lifestyle and national press titles globally.’
‘The Isle of Man Government has allocated specific additional funding for the clean emissions race. Part of this budget has been allocated and will go directly to the teams, rather than to any third parties, to facilitate their travel and other associated event costs. The Isle of Man Government will also fund all race prizes and a £10,000 prize to the first team to record a 100mph lap. In the event of more than one 100mph lap the prize will go to the team that records the fastest race lap.’
He concluded:
‘The regulations that governed the 2009 TTXGP event were developed by the ACU in conjunction with our previous event partner. The 2010 regulations are a simplified version featuring elements of the FIM clean emissions regulations and the original 2009 regulations as well as improvements that the ACU believe are necessary.’
