TT star Davy Morgan hands over £10,000 to cancer charities
Road racing favourite Davy Morgan has raised more than £10,000 for charity since launching his bid to help cancer charities in 2009.
The latest event, the Davy Morgan Golf Day at Knock Golf Club, saw Morgan present a £1,500 cheque to Action Cancer. The money came from ongoing sales of 2009 and 2010 pin badges as well as merchandise sold at meetings throughout 2011.
So far Davy Morgan Racing, supported by the Davy Morgan #71 Road Racing Supporters Club, has handed over £10,350 since 2009, with £8,000 going to Action Cancer and the rest to other cancer charities.
Morgan and his Supporters Club will continue to raise funds for cancer charities in 2012. As well as their association with Action Cancer they will also support the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children and specifically their Shimna Valley Respite Centre. This is due to the fact that the team will be promoting “Childhood Cancer Awareness” in 2012 and all monies raised will be split between the two charities.
At the Davy Morgan Golf Day, sponsored by Belfast Honda, BSS Group and EH Services, the team launched the new pin badge for 2012, which despite still being based on Davy’s Pink Hemet has a completely different look to the previous two.
It is looking at the front rather than the side of the helmet, is done with gold trim rather than silver and will carry a Gold Ribbon, #71 and the text Childhood Cancer Awareness. A donation from the sale of every badge sold will go to the two charities and the DM#71RRSC has again agreed that a donation from all merchandise sold at race events will also be passed on to the two charities at the end of the season.
Kerry Anderson from Action Cancer said:
“This is the third year I have had the pleasure of being invited to a Davy Morgan Racing event to receive a cheque on behalf of Action Cancer. It’s great that the Davy Morgan Supporters Club and Action Cancer have been able to develop this relationship and we are delighted to hear that it will continue for another year.”
“The amount of money raised in three years by the club is brilliant and it is very much appreciated at Action Cancer as it has allowed us to help a lot of people who are going through tough times. Thanks again for your support and we hope the sales of your new badge will go well and of course wish Davy himself a safe and successful 2012.”
Northern Ireland Children Cancer Fund Community Fundraiser Lorna Watson added:
“We are delighted to have the support from the Davy Morgan Road Racing Supporters Club for 2012. We really do rely on the community to help fund our vital services to families living with a childhood cancer in Northern Ireland.”
“Every week in Northern Ireland, three more children, teenagers or young adults will be diagnosed with cancer. We’re here to listen, and to provide practical, emotional and financial support to them and their families.”
“We wish the club well for the year ahead.”
Morgan said:
“This has been a huge effort from everyone within in the Davy Morgan Racing Team over the past three years and although we as road racers are very focused on ourselves; we have to be, it’s great that we can also be part of helping others out in some little way as we go about our racing.”
“To raise over ten grand in three years is a great achievement and is something we as a small team and club should be proud off. I would like to thank the racing fraternity for supporting us, as without them actually buying the badges and merchandise, this would not have happened and I hope they will continue to support us and our chosen charities in 2012.”
Meanwhile, Morgan and his team are preparing for a bust season, funds permitting. He has a full stable of machinery at his disposal –CSC Supersport Yamaha, Strangford Holiday Park Superbike Suzuki, CMS Supertwin Kawasaki, D&GW/DM#71RRSC 250cc Honda and Superstock BMW – and is looking to campaign across Ireland, the Isle of Man UK, including the 2012 Isle of Man TT fuelled by Monster Energy.
His season starts with the Ian Watson Spring Cup at Scarborough on April 15, followed by the Cookstown 100 at the end of the month.
Despite vital sponsorship from Steve and Chris Caffyn (CSC), Trevor Matthewson (SHP) and Tony Morris (CMS), who are supplying bikes and covering some of the running costs, Morgan still has to find entry fees, the remaining running and transport costs and, at the moment, has not reached the required budget to complete a full season.
Once again, Morgan will have to see what happens as the season progresses.
The Supporters Club will again help with the general running costs of the team and D&GW have come on board with some help for the 250cc Honda in 2012, but as yet Morgan has no title sponsor for the Superstock BMW, which he will campaign at the North West 200, TT and Ulster Grand Prix.
Other sponsors include Leisure Services, IMS Ltd, UAsphalt, Jet Plant, La Mon Hotel, EJ Tractors, Inglewood Hotel and trade support from 01RaceFX Graphics, Dunlop Tyres, Rock Oil, NGK Spark Plugs, WIZ and Arai Helmets all helping to fill the teams requirements.
Morgan said:
“I had a test last week in England and I now can’t wait for it all to kick-off, it’s what I do and what I love.”
“I want to thank all those who are already sponsoring, supporting and/or helping me in 2012 and I hope that I can give you something to cheer about during 2012.”
“Finance is a bit tight at present so it would be nice if we could get a title sponsor for the BMW Superstock and a few other personal sponsors on-board to help with the running costs, as a privateer team it is difficult, but as always we will do our best and do it in a professional manner.”
