Isle of Man TT winner Gary Johnson targets improvements at home race
Isle of Man TT winner Gary Johnson has promised there’s ‘more to come’ after a disappointing round of the National Superstock 1000 Championship.
Although Johnson secured 10th at Brands Hatch, retaining his 13th place in the championship standings, he admitted the result wasn’t what he was hoping for.
However, the Samsung Honda rider from Broughton near Brigg believes he can improve further at the upcoming Cadwell Park race – effectively his home event.
A crash during the first qualifying session left Johnson well down the field with a lot of work to do in order to secure a strong grid position, but he recovered well to grab a fourth row place on the starting grid for Sunday’s 15-lap encounter.
As the lights went out Johnson got away to a scorching start and was up to 11th on the opening lap. He passed Jimmy Storrer on lap 5 and was looking to move further up field when the safety car was deployed on lap 8.
As the car left the track at the end of lap 11, Johnson found himself in 8th, but was quickly overhauled by Lee Costello and, on the final lap, he was overtaken by Patrick Metcalf and crossed the finish line 10th.
Johnson said:
“It was great to be back on the Grand Prix circuit and I feel there is still more to come from me and the Samsung Honda with more time on track.”
“Tenth wasn’t what I was hoping for, but we go to Cadwell Park next and that is my home circuit so we will be pushing on again there.”
There is a five week break before the next round.
