Huge car and bike collection to go on display for TT 2015
One of the most significant private collections of cars in the British Isles will open its doors to the public in time for TT 2015.
The motor museum is the creation of father Dennis Cunningham and his son Darren and work is on schedule to allow for a TT opening date.
The impressive, purpose built facility is located on the former RAF base at Jurby, in the north of the island and, with a footprint over 70,000 sq ft on the six-acre site, must rank as one of the biggest buildings in the Isle of Man.
At least 150 four-wheeled vehicles and 150 motorcycles will be on display when it opens with exhibits as diverse as an American Greyhound bus, rare sports cars from the 1930s and TT-winning machines. Most of the four-wheelers are owned by the Cunningham family while carefully selected bike exhibits will largely be loaned to the museum by private owners.
The bikes will all be displayed on the central mezzanine level and nearly all the space has already been allocated since word has spread to collectors on- and off-island about the multi-million pound facility.
The Guardhouse cafe and restaurant is already open, and attracting lots of custom throughout the week.
With masses of free parking, restoration workshops with a viewing gallery, a recreation of a 1930s high street and other features to be revealed, this is surely one of the biggest projects to benefit the island’s tourist industry for many decades.
